Sentinel Athletes taking their game to State

SHS Varsity Volleyball are heading to State this weekend!

If might be time to dig out your red and gold athletic gear and show some team spirit this weekend for local high school athletics. For the second weekend in a row, Steilacoom High School Sentinel athletes will be competing at State tournaments, to the delight of their parents, peers and the community.

It all started on November 3 when nine runners with the Steilacoom High School Cross Country team competed at the State XC Tournament held in Pasco, Washington .  Sebastian Wingfield and Hezekaiah Allen competed individually while Rori Fortmann, Jamie Stalder, Niki Hobbs, Sophie Kingsley, Amanda Jaynes, Regan Bernardoni and Adele Tietgen, known as the “Gold Rush” represented the Sentinel’s women’s team, which ended up in 14th place. Allen placed 46th while Wingfield placed 85th out of 141 runners.

The Sentinel girls swimming and diving team will compete at state championships on Friday morning in Federal Way at the King County Aquatic Center. According to Assistant Coach Carmen Jensen, the girls team placed sixth at Districts and placed second in the 2A League. Swimmers Rachel Arnold, Hannelore Brown, Jacquelyn Dilley, Johanna Forbes, Madelyn Gonzalez, Renee Louck, Sarah Park, Kelsey Parrottee and Kim Vincent will compete in swimming while Marisa Manus competes in diving. The girl’s swim team is coached by Kathy Casey.

Also on Friday, the Sentinel Varsity Volleyball team will compete at their 2A State Tournament. The Lady Sentinels will face Sequim on November 9 at 4:30 p.m. at Pierce College’s Steilacoom location. Alyssa Schafer coaches the team.

Heading into their second playoff game the 6-4 Sentinel’s Varsity Football team will face 9-1 Tumwater on Friday, November 9 at Tumwater Stadium. The game starts at 7 p.m. This game is up for a vote on Q13 FOX Sports ‘Game of the Week’ poll. You can vote until 8 p.m. Thursday, November 8.  The winning game will be featured on Q13 FOX Sports Friday, November 9.
